After background removal — what to check

1. Shadow artefacts: The AI sometimes leaves a faint shadow halo around product edges. Use the edge refinement slider to reduce this.

2. Off-white areas: Light-coloured products (white mugs, cream-coloured clothing) can have edges that blend into the white background. Check for missing edge pixels.

3. Transparent fill colour: If you select white background (#FFFFFF), verify it is rendering as pure white (255, 255, 255) not a near-white — use a colour picker to confirm.

4. 85% fill rule for Amazon: The product itself should fill at least 85% of the image frame. After removing background, crop in closer if needed.

Format comparison

AI background removal quality on different product types

The quality of background removal varies significantly by product type. Products with clearly defined edges and contrasting backgrounds (electronics, cosmetics, packaged goods) produce near-perfect results. Products with complex edges present more challenges.

Hair, fur, and fibrous textures (knitwear, faux fur): AI tools including this one produce acceptable results but fine wisps and flyaways require manual touch-up for professional-grade accuracy. Use edge feathering to smooth artefacts at textured edges.

Transparent or semi-transparent products (glassware, bottles, acrylic): AI tools struggle with transparency — the glass picks up background colour and removing the background also alters the product's appearance. These typically require manual editing in a dedicated tool.

Flat lay products against plain backgrounds: these produce the best results. If you can control your product photography setup, shoot against a consistent mid-grey background — the AI finds the boundary most cleanly when the background colour is far from the product colour.

How it works

1

Upload your product photo

Drop any JPEG or PNG product image. Works best with consistent studio backgrounds.

2

AI removes the background

The AI identifies product edges and removes the background. Processing runs in your browser — photos are never uploaded.

3

Review and refine edges

Check for shadow artefacts, halo effects, or missing edge pixels. Use the feathering slider to smooth edges if needed.

4

Set background to pure white

Select white (#FFFFFF) fill for Amazon compliance, or transparent PNG for use in other workflows.

About this format

Amazon mandates a pure white background (#FFFFFF) on main product listing images. Not off-white, not light grey, not a slightly warm white — pure #FFFFFF with no gradients, shadows, or watermarks. Listings that violate this policy are suppressed in search results until the image is corrected. A product photo that looks like it has a white background to the naked eye may still fail Amazon's automated check if it contains shadow gradients or a cream-white tone.

Shopify and Etsy do not enforce this requirement algorithmically, but the standard practise of using clean white or transparent backgrounds for product images is driven by consistent grid aesthetics: mixed backgrounds in a collection view create visual noise that undermines the professionalism of the catalogue.

This tool removes any background from a product photo and replaces it with pure #FFFFFF — or optionally leaves it as a transparent PNG if your workflow requires compositing the product image elsewhere.

Frequently asked questions

Does Amazon require a white background on product images?+
Yes. Amazon's image policy requires main listing images to have a pure white background (#FFFFFF) with the product filling at least 85% of the image frame. Violations cause listings to be suppressed in search results until corrected.
How do I know if my white background is truly #FFFFFF?+
Use a colour picker tool on the background area of your exported image. It should read RGB (255, 255, 255). Values slightly below (250, 250, 250) may still pass Amazon's checker, but staying at pure 255,255,255 is safest. This tool applies pure #FFFFFF as the fill colour.
Can AI background removal handle transparent product packaging?+
Partially. Glass, clear plastic, and semi-transparent materials are difficult for AI tools because the background colour bleeds through the product. For highly transparent products, AI removal produces a starting point that typically needs manual refinement for professional results.
What image format should I use for Amazon product listings?+
JPEG (sRGB colour space) is the standard for Amazon. Maximum file size is 10MB. Recommended minimum: 1000px on the longest side for zoom functionality. Optimal: 2000-3000px for the main image.
Are my product photos uploaded to a server for processing?+
No. Background removal runs entirely in your browser using AI running locally. Your product photos never leave your device.
