Phone number format:

Always use international format: +[country code][number], e.g., +14155551234 (US) or +442071234567 (UK). This ensures the number works for callers in other countries or with phones configured for different regions.

Avoid local format (e.g., 0800 123 4567) — some phone apps do not parse local formats from tel: URIs correctly and the call may fail to connect.

Extension numbers: The tel: URI supports extensions using ;ext= or , (pause): tel:+15551234567;ext=234 dials the extension automatically after the main number connects on supported systems. Test this if you need extension dialing.

Multiple numbers: If you want to offer multiple contact numbers, consider encoding the primary number as a tel: QR and linking secondary numbers in a vCard QR code on the same card.

Format comparison

Phone QR vs SMS QR: A phone QR opens the dialer — the caller still taps to initiate the call. An SMS QR opens the messaging app. Phone QR is better for synchronous, immediate communication where you expect a real-time conversation. SMS QR is better when you want asynchronous contact or your audience prefers texting to calling.

Phone QR vs vCard QR: A vCard QR encodes name, email, address, and phone — the full contact card. A phone QR encodes just the number. If you want the caller to also have your name and email saved, use a vCard. If you just want the dialer to open with your number, a phone QR is simpler and generates a less dense, faster-scanning code.

How it works

1

Enter the phone number

Type the phone number in international format (+country code followed by the number, no spaces or dashes).

2

Generate

The QR renders immediately. Scan it with your phone to verify the dialer opens with the correct number.

3

Download and use

Download as PNG or SVG. Place on business cards, flyers, shop windows, or any print material where you want to prompt calls.

About this format

A phone number QR code opens the device's phone dialer with your number pre-loaded — the caller just taps the green call button. No typing a number, no copying from a website, no reading digits while trying to dial.

The mechanism is a `tel:` URI: `tel:+15551234567`. Every smartphone handles tel: links natively — it is the same mechanism used when you tap a phone number on a website. Scanning the QR code is equivalent to tapping a clickable phone number, except the interaction starts from a physical piece of paper.

The practical use cases are straightforward: on a business card (scan to call rather than read and dial), on printed service advertisements (plumber, electrician, locksmith), at a reception desk (scan to call the office from your cell), in a shop window (scan to call before visiting), or on a product package (scan to call customer support).

For businesses where inbound calls are a primary conversion — service businesses, local businesses, B2B sales — reducing the friction of calling from a print advertisement directly increases call rates.

Frequently asked questions

Does the phone QR code initiate the call automatically?+
No. The QR code opens the dialer with your number pre-filled, but the caller must tap the call button to initiate the call. This is a deliberate safety behavior — phones do not make calls automatically from QR codes or tel: links without user confirmation. The scanner sees the number, confirms it is correct, and then taps to call.
Does a phone number QR code work on tablets?+
On cellular-capable iPads and Android tablets, it opens the Phone or FaceTime app. On WiFi-only tablets without calling capability, the tel: link may not open anything or may prompt to use a calling app. For WiFi-only devices, the phone QR is less useful — consider a vCard QR that saves the contact number to the Contacts app instead.
Should I use a local or international phone number format?+
Always use international format with the country code prefix: +1 for US and Canada, +44 for UK, and so on. Write the number without spaces, dashes, or parentheses: +15551234567. International format ensures the number works correctly on phones configured for different regions. Local formats like 0800 123 4567 may not be parsed correctly by all devices when embedded in a tel: URI.
Can I track how many calls came from the QR code?+
Not from a standard phone number QR code — there is no intermediary system logging scans. To track call volumes from the QR, use a call tracking number (a forwarded number from a service like CallRail, Twilio, or Google Voice) as the QR destination. Calls to the tracking number are logged and forwarded to your real number. This adds cost but gives you the data.
Can I use a toll-free number in a phone QR code?+
Yes. Toll-free numbers (like 1-800 numbers in the US) work identically to regular numbers in a tel: QR code. Use the international format: +18001234567 (for a US 1-800 number). The caller is not charged for the call since it is toll-free, just as with any other toll-free call. Test that the formatted number connects correctly before finalizing the QR for print.
