The 16:9 safe zone for thumbnails
YouTube displays thumbnails at different aspect ratios depending on context (search, homepage, sidebar, mobile). The safest approach: keep your main subject and any text within the central 1100x620px area of a 1280x720 canvas. The outer 90px on each side can be cropped in certain layouts.
JPEG vs PNG for thumbnails
JPEG at 85–90% quality is the standard choice. At 1280x720, a JPEG thumbnail typically lands at 100–300KB — well under the 2MB limit with room to spare. PNG is only preferable if your thumbnail contains a transparent background or text with hard edges that JPEG blurs.
Format comparison
Why thumbnail clarity at 168x94px matters more than at full size
YouTube's suggestion sidebar shows thumbnails at 168x94px. At that size, fonts below 32px in the full 1280x720 image become illegible, fine details blur into indistinct shapes, and low-contrast compositions disappear into the background.
Top-performing thumbnails are designed with this small-size view in mind: one or two large elements, high contrast between subject and background, and text kept to 3–4 words maximum. Creating at 1280x720 is necessary for quality, but testing at 168x94px before publishing is what separates thumbnails that actually get clicked from thumbnails that look fine in the editor.

About this format
YouTube thumbnails do most of the heavy lifting in deciding whether a viewer clicks. A thumbnail that looks sharp and clear on a 4K monitor often renders as an unreadable blur at the 168x94px size YouTube uses in suggested video sidebars. Designing and exporting your thumbnail at exactly 1280x720 pixels — with readable text and clear subjects even at small sizes — is the starting point for thumbnails that convert.
The 2MB file size limit is the most commonly missed YouTube requirement. Thumbnails above 2MB are rejected at upload with no explanation, leaving creators to guess why their custom thumbnail won't save. Exporting at 1280x720 as JPEG at 85% quality reliably produces files well under this limit.
This resizer outputs thumbnails at the correct dimensions with an optimal quality-to-size ratio, ready to upload without hitting YouTube's size limit.
