Settings guide

Quality settings for HEIC to JPG:

  • ·85–90%: Preserves essentially all visible detail from the HEIC source. Recommended for photos you'll print or share professionally.
  • ·80–85%: Good balance for sharing and social media. Imperceptible quality difference vs 90%.
  • ·75%: Good for web use where file size matters. Still visually excellent.

Converting in bulk: Drop multiple HEIC files at once and download them all as a ZIP. All photos convert with the same quality setting in a single batch.

To stop iPhone saving as HEIC: Settings → Camera → Formats → Most Compatible. This switches all future photos to JPEG. Existing HEIC photos still need conversion.

Format comparison

HEIC vs JPEG: HEIC is 40–50% smaller than JPEG at equivalent quality. HEIC supports 16-bit colour depth (vs JPEG's 8-bit) and more advanced compression. The only practical reason to convert is compatibility.

HEIC vs PNG: Converting HEIC to PNG preserves more quality but produces even larger files than JPEG. Only do this if you plan further editing in software that requires PNG.

HEIC vs WebP: WebP would be a more modern output format than JPEG, and achieves similar compression to HEIC with better browser support. However, JPEG remains the safest universal target.

About this format

HEIC exists because it saves 50% storage compared to JPEG at equivalent quality — a meaningful advantage when you're taking hundreds of photos on a 256GB iPhone. Apple introduced it in iOS 11 and it's been the default format since.

The problem: HEIC is practically invisible outside Apple's ecosystem. Windows can't open HEIC files by default. Most design tools don't accept them. Email recipients on Windows see a question mark. The moment you need to share, edit, or use an iPhone photo outside Apple software, HEIC becomes an obstacle.

Converting to JPG solves this immediately. JPG is the most universally supported image format in existence — it opens everywhere, on every device, in every program. This converter handles the conversion in your browser without installing anything.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my iPhone save photos as HEIC instead of JPEG?+
HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container) was introduced by Apple in iOS 11 to save storage space. It achieves roughly 50% smaller file sizes than JPEG at equivalent quality — important when you're taking hundreds of photos. The trade-off is compatibility.
Why can't Windows open HEIC files by default?+
HEIC uses the HEVC codec, which requires a license. Microsoft charges for the codec in the Microsoft Store. Without it, Windows can't decode HEIC natively. Converting to JPG solves this without paying for the codec.
Does converting HEIC to JPG reduce photo quality?+
Slightly. The HEIC format is already compressed. Converting to JPEG at 85–90% quality preserves essentially all visible detail. The difference is imperceptible in typical viewing.
How do I change my iPhone to save photos as JPG instead of HEIC?+
Settings → Camera → Formats → Most Compatible. This switches from HEIC to JPEG for all new photos. Existing HEIC photos still need to be converted.
Can I convert multiple HEIC files at once?+
Yes. Drop multiple HEIC files in a single batch and download them all as a ZIP.
Can I convert HEIC to PNG instead of JPG?+
Yes — use the format converter and select PNG as output. PNG will preserve slightly more quality but produce a larger file than JPG.
Are my photos uploaded to a server?+
No. Conversion runs entirely in your browser.
